Lately we can read of lot about hackers concerning wikileaks.

It’s kinda funny to see how politicians and journalists deal with this. I have to admit some people understand they profession… but I want to focus on the group which in 2010 still aren’t able to get the point.

Here on Dutch television I saw a newsreporter pronouncing hacking wrong, he pronounced it as ‘hakken’ which means slashing/cut wood… LoL… he did that at least 2 times…

Ok. Actually this dude is not that bad. I’m sure we won’t do that anymore the next time he receive the correct information.

I think it’s more wrong that people say DDoS is hacking. I like to see a hacker as someone who goes inside a system and leaves without leaving a trace. That’s a hacker IMHO. A hacker should also not considering to break something… kind of gentlemen’s agreement. It’s the sport to show you are able to do it. When I did this in the past I always left a note for the system administrator…

I see a DDoS someone who is knocking like a crazy one on your door and when you open the door he/she disappears… like… little rascals… annoying kids pulling your doorbell and run… You have to stop the things you are doing to look on the door, but then you can continue your activities.

I see a big difference here. If you distract people of business that much they cannot do their normal things you steal time and so money of them. There is loss…

Papers are writing in the Netherlands the cops are of a high level of cyber-awareness. I was really laughing when I read this. I have experience with this myself. Maybe it’s because of Limburg hasn’t have the competent people here but they don’t solve cybercrimes at all. I assisted several customers to make reports and evidence of businesses and people who were victim of cybercrime, never heard of it. All those cases, nothing. The questions they ask are really pathetic. It’s like the guy who writing down the police report just was happy that he just got his certificate of Word 2002, dislike his other collegues… That’s the level….

Than the structure of hack groups. I remember how we did this in the early days… There were founders and senior staff. Don’t let the term senior mislead you. Often senior staff members were people who were older then 18… yeah you got it… because of legal reasons… When I read the news a 16 year old dude did it wasn’t surprising me at all… then the 19 year old… He wanted to use his own IP so he can fight for the freedom of internet? Smart to harm a business with loss.. little lack of attention and horny for some publicity?

I don’t know but it’s funny that if a bunch of people gather on the street demonstrating against raising retirement age nothings happens but when a handfull of teenagers do some DDoS attack all the country is shocked.

The good thing is that finally some attention is given to the lack of security at government departments…. so there is also something positive about hacking… really….

I remember well that in 1989 I’ve built my first LAN (Local Area Network) at home for a testcase. Internet was only accessible via modems and did not support graphical user interface at that moment. Generally it was being used for e-mail, gopher and usenet. Because I owned a BBS I had several computers running which I wanted to connect to eachother so they could benefit all from the expensive harddrives I bought. It was my first LAN and also WAN (Wide Area Network) in home. I liked the benefits from it immediately. When people saw my configurations they look at me a little bit weird. They were right. At that time I had 13 computers (286s and 386s) working 24/7 receiving and sending e-mails. If we look at present time… how everything is evolved into fast and easy usage.

Not only our computers and laptops are connected to your LAN. Almost everyone had now a router in home which is connected via cable or adsl by a WAN connection (internet). But it doesn’t stop here.

We have currently different options to choose from:

1. via cables, UTP or STP, mainly for the big files and fast working, at home speeds are possible till 1 Gb/s
2. wireless WiFi, at this moment capable doing 54 Mb/s (soon this will be a lot faster)
3. wireless bluetooh, several smartphones and devices support this

A device like a MP3-player or a smartphone with bluetooth enabled has introduced a new kind of network, named PAN (Personal Area Network)

They are people who have a harddrive connect to their LAN, this is called SAN (Storage Area Network).

De possibilities are enormous now but even more impressive are the speeds which are possible nowadays.

In 1989 we were really happy to achieve 1-2 Mb/s with our COAX connection, somewhat later we managed to have 10 Mb/s. Quickly 100 Mb/s and today 1000 Mb/s (= 1 Gb/s) is becoming common at home.

If you see how fast the speeds of internet have evolved… from a 1-2 KB/s connection to a 120 Mb/s connection in 22 years. 120 Mb/s is simple said 15.000.000 KB/s. That’s in 22 year 7 million times faster… I’m happy that today certain manufacturers drop old standards faster than before. We have to focus to go in front and not standing still… standing still is the same as going back in time. The vehicle industry hasn’t had such progress in the last years. After 100 years (which is almost 5x longer period than IT) we can only reach 8.5 mach with an unmanned vehicle (not really practical either) (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record_for_railed_vehicles) and in the air we managed to reach 3.500 km/u. This record is by the wat more than 30 years old (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_airspeed_record#Official_records_versus_unofficial). Looks to me as no progress

In IT at the moment the progress of evolution is going fast. I read somewhere that Google in their 10 year of existance had their capacity more than a thousands time evolved. In 10 years!

We will see this kind of grow also in home. With the introduction of HD and 3D and other applications we will need more and more bandwith.

I like to see the future like that… let those evolutions come… as fast as possible…

Maybe you’ve already heard it… no? Under which rock did you stay the last days?

HP said goodbye to the HP Slate. For the people who don’t know what a HP Slate is… Microsoft in person of Steven Ballmer announced the HP Slate running Windows 7 on the CES. That’s friend number 1

Friend number 2 is Microsoft… I was, sorry I have to write ‘am’, charmed of the features presented of the Microsoft Courier, finally a way to say goodbye to my paper journal… but Microsoft has announced that the Courier will not come on the market. That’s disappointment 2…

It did took longer than most people who know me expected. The first product of Apple that has my support is the Apple iPad. I never been against Apple. I only think most users of Apple products believe the marketing a little bit to enthousiastic. But the truth is Apple always has the marketing done well. I think the iPad will be the start of a trend we will see in the market of eReaders. Their product exist and works. HP and Microsoft left this tablet market premature. Dutch announcement of the iPad has not been confirmed yet but rumours indicate availablity in the Netherlands around september 2010. Dutch newspaper Telegraaf and Autoweek announced their vision on iPad. Great!

What is going to happen in 2010?

The manufacturers of television will change their focus from FullHD to 3D. HDMI 1.4 is already updated so their specifications can support 3D. Sony announced the PS3 will support this. Bluray discs should be able to provide content in 3D.

USB3.0 and SATA3 will be available as mainstream products. Actually they are already available for reasonable prices, ASUS and GigaByte have already mainboards with these interfaces. Thank due USB3.0 we will see some FullHD webcam on the market to provide realtime 1920×1080 filming and other nice applications which require lots of bandwith. USB2.0 was able to achieve 480 Mb/s as theoretical limit while USB3.0 will do 4.8 Gb/s (4800 Mb/s). Tenfold In 2010 will these connections and interfaces become mainstream and find their way in new computers.

Consoles will focus on controllers. Microsoft announced their Natal. Sony will come with their Motion Controller. Online gaming will become more important. I think Sony will adapt some strategies of Microsoft like Microsoft Live! has. Not completely but something similar.

2009 was already showing 64-bit operatingsystems arrive on home computers. I see it around me more and more. A lot of users, even advanced users, are not aware of the fact their new PC is running, especially Windows 7, the 64-bit version. Because of this they choose the wrong drivers or applications. Adobe is providing more and more of their application also in 64-bit versions. In 2010 64 bit will become more mainstream, which is I believe good .

Socialnomics will become more important in relation of doing business on internet (Facebook, Hyves (typical Dutch), MySpace, etc..). I think internet advertisement will grow a lot.

In The Netherlands almost all Dutch televisionchannels will start broadcasting in HD. I expect that around march 2010 the commercial channel will do the transition to HD. The negotations are currently in progress. CI+ is completed. The contentproviders agreed now broadcasting can be in HD.

A different story…. I have the feeling Apple will grow their marketshare. More often you see this nice designed computers in peoples home but also in offices.

People are going to connect more devices on internet. IP TV will grow more. Modern FullHD televisions have already functionalities builtin. Your TV is connected to the internet and you are able to see YouTube or ‘Uitzendinggemist’ (English note: you can review broadcasting of public dutch Television). Also DLNA and similar functions give you the possibility to view photos, videos and listen to your music streaming from your computer to your television. Because of this the television set will become a more centrale device for multimedia in the livingroom.

People will see live television events or rebroadcasts more often on the internet.

In 2010 I expect in The Netherlands to show the first commercially implemented Microsoft Surface solutions.

On the market of processor we will see more and more 4-core or quadcores to become normal. Processors with more than 4 cores will be available widely around march for a reasonable price. We will see the comeback of an old friend. HyperThreading shall again be implemented in this new generation of processors.

FullHD HDD camcorders will be available a streetprice around 400 euro and so available for the mass.

I don’t know exactly which standard will win the battle but I expect in 2010 a breakthru of looking for 3D without the need of the annoying glasses. I already saw this in the CeBIT in Hannover but I think in 2010 some manufacturers will leave the standard for what it is. I think that Philips will abandon their own system and choose for another. Time will tell.

In 2010 I expect that mobile operators in The Netherlands will change their usage policy concerning using VoIP on your internet flatfee subscription. We see this happen in some European countries.

In 2010 Spain will take the presidency of the European Union Council from Sweden.

Canada will organise the Winter Olympics while South Africa will do so for the World Cup Soccer.

From Kennedy Space Center in Florida a historic mission will start named STS-133. This will be the last mission in which the Space Shuttle will be operational. 2010 is the last year the space shuttle will be active. The successor is ready and it’s name is Orbital Space Plane, sometimes called OSP.

Will E-Book readers play an important role in 2010? I don’t know for myself. I’m not an e-book reader. Ofcourse, sometimes it’s handy to search technical things. A searchable ebook is handy. We will see.

Since a while I noticed that Apple with their MacBooks are bought more and more. Even some companies take the decision to migrate to Apple.

It looks strange to me see this happening. If you ask the people why they do this you will hear the argument most time emotionally and so not made on functionality.

Their management decides for Apple because… it looks great. A lot of consultant cannot do their work like they would like, but that seems not the main issue. When saving costs you don’t want to go to Apple. They are inside the higher and expensive area of the market. This is the only true reason why they choose Apple. Look us, on a different level.

I admit I like the looks of MacBooks. Only they are so inpractical. Daily tasks cannot be done, due of the fact there are only Windows-versions available.

You are stuck with Apple when buying cables or accessoires. This can become an issue when you travel a lot and in a urgent situation in a need for a cable. It’s horrible when you on the road and suddenly you need a cable. There are very few stores. PC stuff is a lot easier to find due to the mass of stores.

Apple is beautiful but in the real world inpractical. Maybe for a normal and light user who only surfs on the web it’s an alternative, but if you somewhat more experience user with an Apple you will reach it’s limitation fast.

Windows 7 is now available for some day. We hear nothing than positive reviews. What I think is fascinating because everone speaks positive about Windows 7. I don’t going to bash Windows 7, because I already found Vista a great product. It’s not their fault a lot of technicians could not cope with the changes Vista had and they didn’t understand it.

Funny thing is that Windows 7 should be on the market within 2-3 years. Now Microsoft has put it faster on the market to ‘please’ the consumers. Funny in a technical view is that Windows 7 is created based on Vistas code. Isn’t that strange. Vista was that annoying OS… but now put into a new jacket and look everybody likes it.

This is the proof that those technicians are nothing more than a herd of sheep… simple followers

I was thinking Windows 7 should start the beginning of accepting 64 bit in an OS. According the first numbers of sales of HP, Samsung and ASUS you can indeed see a lot of 64 bit OS are being sold with new computers.

History again repeats itself. People complaining that Windows is a bad thing, while it’s not that bad at all. A lot is said because of misinformation and incompetent consultants. Microsoft knows how to deal well with this.

Do I advise Windows 7 above Windows Vista? I have to say it works comfortable. A lot of new features are added which don’t look important in a first glance. But they give you such a nice feeling when working that you miss it when going back to Vista.

Today the judge in The Netherlands decided The Pirate Bay has to be blocked for users of NL. My opinion is simply that it’s ridiculous but also a curious decision. There are many (more!) websites who have worst content on their sites than TPB, actually content which can harm people and businesses. I’m not speaking for piracy, but the way how they do fake solutions. A little bit naive and stupid if you think piracy will be gone if TPB is not accessible for Dutch users. People who want to download illegal can always find a way… Yes, really intelligent to push this further into illegal circruits in the background. Strange policy.

Google and Youtube.com have more references and links to illegal content than TPB. Even more users who actively search to find and get illegal software.. what is the technical difference between Google and TPB ? Strange that the people who cannot send a SMS decide on this big issues… pity for internetusers in the Netherlands…. censoring has not only hit China… it’s here too. They measure with 2 different systems.

Internet 2.0 only for us Dutchies postbus51.nl (governmentsite) and some Dutch newspapersites which are owned by Dutch companies… Can you imagine what COULD happen if you read text on those sites which led you to illegal activities… come on!

I do not say google and youtube are illegal, neither I say TPB is legal. Technical they are in my opinion the same. Gving information. You don’t have to visit TPB, neither Google. It’s your decision.
